The Senate approved a long-anticipated Internet sales tax proposal on Monday, moving the legislation one step closer to enactment and paving the way for shoppers to pay sales tax on the majority of online purchases.
The so-called Marketplace Fairness Act would allow the 45 states (and the District of Columbia) that currently charge sales taxes to require large online retailers to collect tax on purchases made by their residents. The law would only apply to online sellers that have sales of at least $1 million outside of states where they have physical operations, like a store or a warehouse.

Samoa Air has become the first airline to charge passengers according to how much they weigh. The company carries travelers on hops between Pacific islands that have some of the highest obesity rates in the world. Instead of charging for each seat, Samoa Air has started weighing passengers along with their luggage, and charging them a fee reflecting the total, depending on the length of the flight. Fees range from about $1 to $4 per kilo (2.2 pounds), meaning passengers pay a little under $50 to $200 per 100 lbs. “This is the fairest way of traveling,” Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton says. “There are no extra fees in terms of excess baggage or anything.

TMZ first reported that upwards of 12 celebrities and political figures — like Jay-Z, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian, Ashton Kutcher and Paris Hilton — had been hacked. Financial and personal information, including social security numbers, bank accounts, mortgage information and credit card details, were “doxxed” (posted online) to the website Exposed.su by a group of Russian hackers.

After another year of record losses for the U.S. Postal Service, sending letters and packages is going to get even more expensive in 2013.

On Jan. 27, the cost of a standard postage stamp will increase by a penny to 46 cents, while a postcard stamp will also go up by one cent to 33 cents. To send 2013 mail at 2012 prices, shoppers can stock up on Forever stamps before the price change takes place.

But with the agency facing a record deficit of $15.9 billion, other postage increases will take a bigger hit to your wallet. Shipping costs will rise by an average of 4%, while the cost of using popular priority mail flat-rate boxes and envelopes will go up by as much as 9%.

Among the throngs of Americans prowling the malls and trawling ?e-commerce sites, it turns out that many Christmas shoppers are looking out for themselves. Retail-research firm NPD Group in mid-December said that, thus far, about one third of consumers have engaged in what is euphemistically called self-gifting. That’s up from 12 percent in a typical pre-recession year, and up from the 19 percent who said they planned to do so last year. The National Retail Federation, the dispenser of all holiday-­related data, said that in 2012, nearly 60 percent of shoppers would engage in the practice.
